Liquid chromatography can operate with an open or a closed system. In the case of an open system, the stationary phase can be taken out directly and be examined. Examples are paper chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. Liquid column chromatography or high performance liquid chromatography can be designated as closed systems. Liquid chromatography is often coupled with mass spectrometry. Chromatography serves here for separation, while the mass spectrometer is used for detection and quantification of the separated components. Other detectors can be also applied, such as a UV/VIS detector or a conductivity detector. In case of such a coupling, the interface is decisive.
